From December 2022, Elena Agudio is taking over the direction of Villa Romana from Angelika Stepken. Elena Agudio, born in Italy and having been based in Berlin between 2008 and 2023, is an art historian and a curator whose practice is concerned with issues of decanonisation, migration and diasporic belonging, ecological and planetary habitability, and the creation of sustainable infrastructures for and with vulnerable communities. She is in particular interested
in exploring the potential of curatorial practices as forms of troubling, with a focus on their performative and relational aspects.
Between 2013 and 2023 she served as artistic co-director at SAVVY Contemporary – The Laboratory of Form-Ideas, alongside its founder and director Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung. Since 2012, she has been also artistic director of the non-profit association Association of Neuroesthetics (AoN)_Platform for Art and Neuroscience, a project in collaboration with the Medical University of Charité and The School of Mind and Brain of the Humboldt University encouraging both a dialogue and lasting cooperation between contemporary art and the cognitive sciences.
She writes and teaches, and since 2017 she has been lecturing at the Weißensee School of Art in Berlin - at *foundationClass, in the Foundation Courses, and from 2020 at the Master Degree in Spatial Strategies (Raumstrategien). In 2017 and 2018 she was Guestprofessor at HFBK (Kunsthochschule für Bildende Künste) in Hamburg and Resident Fellow at Helsinki University of the Arts.
Claudia Fromm was born in 1974 in Herten /NRW. After an apprenticeship in bookselling in Germany she graduated in German-Italian-Studies and Art History at the Universities of Bonn and Florence. Since January 2014 she has been working as an administrative assistant at the Villa Romana.
Ala (French teacher) and Victor Cebotaru (designer) have been taking care of the house and garden of Villa Romana since 2008.
