To form a prelude to the concert programm WHAT'S NEW the ensemble FontanaMIX will present a journey throughout different generations of German composers, from Kagel and Rhim to Matthias Pintscher and Philipp Maintz. It is a photograph of the new and a flashback into a varied prism. In the night concert the nordic electronic sounds of the Berlin based Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen will be combined with Erik Drescher's flutes. WHAT'S NEW ist also a synergy between German institutions such as the DAAD, Villa Massimo and Villa Romana, which have always dedictaed themsevles to the support of contemporary arts.

The FontanaMIXensemble debuted in 2002, performing in a concert for Bologna Festival. Since 2004 it has been ensemble in residence at the Department of Music and Performing Arts, University of Bologna, and is active in several festivals and concert venues: Festival of Reggio Emilia (REC), Institute of Japanese Culture in Rome, Teatro Comunale, MAMbo and Festival Angelica in Bologna, Milano Musica Festival, Nuova Consonanza in Rome, Amici della Musica in Palermo, Biennale Musica in Venice. The most notable feature in the Ensemble’s history is the cooperation with composers like Kaija Saariaho, Fausto Romitelli, Jonathan Harvey, Sylvano Bussotti, Toshio Hosokawa, Gilberto Cappelli, Francesco Carluccio, Giorgio Magnanensi, Paolo Aralla, Atli Ingolfsson, Paolo Perezzani, Giulio Castagnoli, Maurizio Pisati. FontanaMIX ensemble, conducted since its foundation by Francesco La Licata, performed with a number of guest artists: the conductors Yoichi Sugiyama and Giorgio Magnanensi, mezzosoprano Monica Bacelli, Bass-baritone Nicholas Isherwood, pianist Mauro Castellano, cellists Frances-Marie Uitti and Francis Dillon, flutist Thuridur Jónsdóttir, violinist Paolo Chiavacci, accordionist Corrado Rojac, contrabassist Stefano Scodanibbio and choreographer Luca Veggetti. FontanaMIX, as part of the concert season EXITIME, in collaboration with Teatro Comunale in Bologna and University’s Department of Music, devotes an annual portrait to a leading figure amongst the composers of our age: after Kaija Saariaho, Wolfgang Rihm and Jonathan Harvey, in the 2009-2010 season four concerts will be dedicated to George Crumb.

Phillip Maintz was born in 1977 where he received his first composition lessons as a student of Michael Reudenbach from 1993 to 1997. In 1997 he started his composition studies with Robert HP Platz at the Maastricht Conservatory and graduated in 2003 as a Master of Arts with honours. Since 2001 he has additionally taken courses at the CRFMW (Centre de Recherches et de Formations Musicales de Wallonie) of the Université de Liege. In 2003 he did a Stage de Composition et d’Informatique Musicale at IRCAM in Paris. Since the autumn of 2003 he has been studying with Karlheinz Essl at the Studio for Advanced Music Technologies of the Bruckner Conservatory, Linz (Austria). Philipp Maintz lives currently in Berlin. In 2002 Philipp Maintz was awarded a grant by the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt and an Honourable Mention at the International Gaudeamus Music Week, Amsterdam. He was Composer in Residence at the Künstlerhof Schreyahn (Germany) in 2004. In 2005 he was awarded the Ernst vonSiemens Musikstiftung Grant, in January 2006 also the scholarship of the Wilfried-Steinbrenner-Foundation. His works for solo instruments, chamber ensemble and orchestra have been performed by the Arditti Quartet, Zephyr Quartet, Ensemble InterContemporain, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Ensemble ’88, IXION Ensemble, Ensemble Intégrale and the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart as well as by Bernhard Wambach, Armand Angster, Melise Mellinger and Irvine Arditti. His music has been performed at festivals such as the International Gaudeamus Music Week (Amsterdam), Rheinisches Musikfest (Cologne), tremplin (Paris), Schreyahner Herbst, Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (Darmstadt), ars nova (SWR), Salzburger Festspiele, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, Festival Agora (Paris) and Wien Modern. At the moment Maintz is staying as a fellow at Villa Massimo in Rome.

Erik Drescher was born in Bremen in 1972.He based in Berlin. He studies the flute with Carin Levine and Hans Jörg Wegner at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Private studies with Robert Aitken and Robert Dick. Several participations at the International Summer Courses of Contemporary Music Darmstadt. Simon Steen-Andersen, born in 1976 in Odder (Denmark) lives in Berlin. Studies with Mathias Spahlinger at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Freiburg, Germany, 2001/2002 and with Gabriel Valverde at CEAMC in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2003/2004. Post-grade studies with Bent Sorensen and Hans Abrahamsen at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, 2004-2006 - graduated with the highest honours. 1st prize winner with String Quartet in the Holmboe Competition 2000. Praesens awarded a prize by The Danish Arts Foundation 2002. Received working grants from the Danish Arts Foundation 2003 and 2004 and in 2005 the Bisballe Prize as Artist of the Year and a grant from the Léonie Sonning Music Foundation in 2006. Also in 2006 he received The Danish Arts Foundation's Three Year Grant and a Scolarship Prize at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse. 1st prize winner in Presence China 2008 with Ouvertures. In 2008 he also received the "Kranichsteiner Prize" at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music. Nominated for The Nordic Council Music Prize 2010. Winner of the International Rostrum of Composers 2010 with Ouvertures. Works commissioned by among others ensemble recherche/Donaueschinger Musiktage 2007, Ensembles Modern, Radio Kammerphilharmonie Hilversum/Donaueschinger Musiktage 2010, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, The French National Orchestra, Oslo Sinfonietta, Århus Sinfonietta, Asamisimasa (NO), The Pearls Before Swine Experience (SE) and Ensemble 2000.
